What is Connecting in Community for Doctors?
Many of us went into medicine because we enjoy connecting with people but often spend more time in front of a computer than connecting with our patients. Not only that but medicine has become increasingly complex while there are fewer and fewer of us to do the work that needs to be done. Burnout is at an all-time high and many of us are questioning why we went into medicine in the first place. As physicians, we are good at taking care of others but it’s often at the expense of taking care of ourselves.
Connecting in Community for Doctors is about bringing physicians together to have heart-centred conversations. To share stories, give and receive support and connect with our own inner wisdom. As we share our challenges and learn from each other, we can emerge much stronger after a very stressful couple of years.
What topics are covered?
Together we’ll explore similar topics to those covered in my “Connecting in Community for Women” course, but we’ll be adapting them to a medical context and making adjustments to the course material based on the needs of the group. The topics we explore in “Connecting in Community” are the following:
- Creating our community of support and caring for ourselves
- Mindfulness, meditation and sacred space
- Embodiment and emotions – understanding our nervous system
- Intuition and accessing the wisdom of our inner wise one
- Boundaries and conscious choices
- Self compassion
- Integration – putting it all together and setting intentions for the future
How does it work?
- We gather together on Zoom for 90 minutes once a month for 8 months
- We open the circle by lighting a candle and doing a short grounding meditation
- Each participant will have an opportunity to check in about how they’re doing and what they’re learning
- I give a short talk on the week’s topic
- We do some journaling on the week’s theme
- If time permits, there will be small group discussion in pairs or groups of 3
- We then have a discussion of the week’s topic as a larger group
- We close the circle with a reading and blowing out the candle. There are also some options given for home practice for those who wish to explore the month’s theme in more detail
